Do You Suffer From Chronic Whiplash Syndrome?
Massage Therapy Can Help

Did you know that 20% of people involved in rear-end motor vehicle collisions later experience symptoms in the neck and upper back region? Most recover quickly with medication and rest while some develop a chronic condition called: Chronic Whiplash Syndrome.

Vehicle damage is not necessarily equal to the severity of soft-tissue injury caused by the collision. Human bodies absorb impact differently than motor vehicles. Seat belts may protect from broken bones but leave the shoulder and neck area vulnerable to whiplash injury. Even a slight fender-bender may cause some residual symptoms.

The definition of whiplash is "soft tissue injury to neck caused by over extension/flexion in a whipping motion." Symptoms may occur right after the accident up to several days following. They range from: neck stiffness, headaches, dizziness, burning sensations, shoulder pain, back pain, memory loss, concentration impairment, and sleep disturbances. Chronic Whiplash Syndrome would be described as symptoms lasting longer than 6 months.

In reaction to trauma, the soft tissues of the neck region -- the muscles, tendons and ligaments -- tighten and go into spasm to support the neck vertebrae and to recoil from the pain. This is a natural defense mechanism of our wonderful human design; however, if the injury is not properly treated in a timely manner, you may risk developing chronic pain.

In addition to the natural soft-tissue reaction to trauma, people often subconsciously restrict movement because of the pain. This can add to the development of chronic pain patterns and dysfunction. Physical or emotional stress may also increase the pain, making some days worse than others.

Massage therapy can be a remedy for Chronic Whiplash Syndrome by lessening the pain and increasing functional movement. There are various massage techniques that reduce painful muscle spasm by increasing blood supply, facilitate bonding muscles back to attachment sites, break up scar tissue and restore flexibility to the injured muscles. A knowledgeable licensed massage therapist will apply proper technique to the specific muscles that are typically affected in this type of soft-tissue injury.

If you are involved in motor vehicle accident and develop the whiplash symptoms listed above, ask your doctor or physical therapist about massage therapy as part of your rehabilitation treatments. If you have developed chronic pain patterns continuing for longer than 6 months after an accident, your doctor may be able to refer you to a licensed massage therapist who specializes in Chronic Whiplash Syndrome.
